One goal in Inglewood, that's the difference
Some thoughts on the regressive nature of the national team and where everything "might" be heading
There’s something elemental to the idea that the difference has only been one goal. In the same place Jimmy Lozano’s México beat Panamá 1-0 to lift another Gold Cup, it was the same place where Jimmy’s México lost 0-1 to Venezuela and returned to the doom and gloom that has haunted it post-pandemic.
The reality is simple. Football is evolving at a rapid pace, and El Tri continues to live off its historic 1-0 win over Germany in 2018. Look at Chucky Lozano, that winning goal has allowed him to sign the contract of his life with San Diego in 2024.
El Tri is stagnated, you can say. El Tri is falling off a precipice, slowly, making the fall hurt so much more.
El Tri is cursed, the Copa América ended with one goal scored and one conceded. It included injuries to Edson Álvarez and Malagón. El Tri is so cursed that Gerardo Arteaga, who scored México’s only goal in this US-based tournament, was awarded with a severe injury that will likely prevent him to start this season with Monterrey.
Last night the name that made the rounds was Javier “Vasco” Aguirre. Again? The same dude that lost 2-0 to the U.S. 22 years ago, no thank you. He’s a great guy, affable and historic, but it will be best to keep him aside.
However the desperate state that México will live in the next hours may lead to unthinkable scenarios.
Also, why is the national team selling this Copa América failure as a generational change? Stop lying, this is not the 1970s. If you want to see generational change look at the current Costa Rica, who in 2014, did in fact play el quinto partido.
It’s normal to feel disappointed. The current state is the hardest in our lifetime probably. And the inefficiency from the top is so brutal, that the idea of a positive outlook feels like acting the fool.
It’s time to work, that’ all. And realize, once and for all, that the time period between 1994-2018, represented a great moment for the talent and country situation that we have. It happened, we can do it again.
We all laughed and criticized Chicharito when he said, “¡Imaginemos cosas chingonas!” More than ever, all we have is imaginar cosas chingonas because the current state is flat out dismal.
Un abrazo a todos, volveremos ❤️🇲🇽
Pobre mexico, tan lejos de dios y tan cercas a los estados unidos. That quote applies here as it is that persistent chase if the mexican-american $$$ that is dooming Mexican football yet enriching the owners and causing our players to be over-valued relative to their value on the global market
