Let’s do something different. Instead of writing a reaction piece to today’s game, I will just share thoughts here before, during and after the game. I haven’t done one of these, so let’s see how it works! 🇲🇽⚽️
It what will be one of Martino's toughest games in charge of El Tri, he has decided to go with a heavily Liga MX based national team. What's worth pointing out, though, is that Antuna and Charly have started the year in great form, as has Vega. This is a major test for the fullbacks, Sánchez and Gallardo, both have been heavily criticized for their inconsistent performances. Looks like Edson, Tecatito, Arteaga and Chucky will be fresh for the home games at Azteca. It's three games, just like a World Cup group stage. It's a rather jammed pack group stage, in which El Tri needs at least seven points.
2-1 win. Heading into this match, we kinda knew it was going to be ugly. Just as it looked like a 10-men Jamaica was about to take a 1-0 win, El Tri woke up. It's important to note that El Tri's defense looked a bit brittle at times, and it will be an area that will improve once Montes and Edson are back.
The biggest takeaway I take from tonight is Charly, Lainez and Vega's performances. It's so important for the youngsters to step up, especially during a time when it's inevitable that a generational shift is underway. The following games will be excellent opportunities for other youngsters to step up like Julian Araujo, Johan Vásquez and Gerardo Arteaga.
Charly Rodríguez. One of the biggest bright spots in the Tata era has been Charly, especially when you go back to the 2019 Gold Cup. It's true that his level has been up and down since then. His last two years were pretty erratic, but 2022 couldn't have started better. In order for Martino to change the trajectory of El Tri's current state, Charly needs to come up with big performances. The first one has to be today.
This is the rumored XI: https://twitter.com/ale_orvananos/status/1486739322950799377?s=20
Ochoa
Jorge Sánchez; Araujo; Moreno; Gallardo
HH; Charly; Guardado
Antuna; Funes Mori; Vega

Two goals from Cuauhtémoc Blanco in 2001!

15 minutes. Great game so far from HH. If El Tri aspires to compete at the high level, they'll need this HH version.
